Meet Your Advocate: Michelle Lin
1. What inspired you to become an educational advocate?
As a parent of a child with complex medical needs, I know firsthand how overwhelming the special education journey can feel. I wanted to share what I’ve learned and help other families. I am fortunate that my background as a guidance counselor and working in healthcare gave me a strong foundation in advocacy, making it a natural choice of profession.
2. What’s one piece of advice you often share with families?
Focus on what’s appropriate under IDEA, not what feels “best.” Advocacy works best when we ground it in the law and keep the student’s goals at the center.
3. What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
Seeing progress, big or small. Whether it’s one key change in an IEP or helping parents and schools work together better, every step forward for a child is rewarding.
4. How do you support families navigating the special education process?
I walk with families every step, explaining, strategizing, and helping them feel confident and prepared for what comes next.
5. What’s one thing you wish more parents knew about advocacy?
Advocacy isn’t about conflict; it’s about collaboration and persistence. You don’t need to know everything; you need to stay informed, ask questions, and keep your child’s needs at the heart of the process.
